Local AI for companies: sovereign, secure, GDPR-compliant

Local AI runs on hardware in your own premises instead of in a provider’s cloud. Your data stays with you. That gives you control, makes data protection easier and makes you independent of the prices, terms and jurisdictions of outside providers. We advise, train and set up the technology — in person, from Cologne and Weimar.

What is local AI?

Local AI means that language models (LLMs) run on computers that you own or control — in the office, in a server room or in a data centre of your choice. It is also called on-premise AI. Your requests and documents are processed there and are not sent to an external provider.

This is made possible by open models (open weights) and compact hardware. For many applications, Apple Silicon (Mac mini, Mac Studio) or NVIDIA DGX Spark is already enough.

DataGoes to the provider. The provider decides location and jurisdiction.Stays in your premises.
CostsOngoing, usage-based fees.Purchase and electricity, then easy to plan.
Getting startedReady in minutes.Setup required. We take care of that.

Hybrid is possible: sensitive data stays local, non-critical applications keep running via cloud interfaces. We tell you honestly where which solution makes sense.

Sovereign AI: what does it mean for your company?

AI is sovereign when you decide what happens to your data yourself — and are not merely promised it by contract. Four things belong to it:

Data sovereignty

You control the entire path of your data. Nothing flows unnoticed into third parties’ training data.

Access sovereignty

You decide who may use the AI. Requests and documents stay with you.

Operational sovereignty

No lock-in: you can switch models and software and keep running the technology yourself.

Location and jurisdiction

Your data sits in a place you know. This also avoids the question of the US CLOUD Act, which under certain circumstances allows US authorities to access data held by US providers even if it is stored in Europe.

Sovereignty does not mean self-sufficiency. It makes sense to keep handling non-critical tasks via cloud interfaces and to keep only the sensitive part local. We build the mix that fits your data and risks with you.

Secure AI: what is meant — and what is not?

For AI in a company, “secure” means two levels:

Important and honest: Local is not automatically secure. An unprotected computer is a risk wherever it stands. Security comes from configuration and operation. Both are part of our work, but also of your responsibility in daily use.

This is not legal advice. For binding statements, please consult your legal counsel or your data protection officer.

How we work

  1. Understand: workshop on your use cases, review of the current state, suitable hardware size. We listen before we build.
  2. Build: pilot project or prototype, local or hybrid, shoulder to shoulder with your team.
  3. Enable: training for users, decision-makers and developers, documented and tailored to your use case.
  4. Let go: We leave. Your team can do it. That was always the plan.

Frequently asked questions about local AI

What is local AI?
Local AI means that AI language models run on computers you own or control. Your requests and documents are processed there and are not sent to an external provider. It is also called on-premise AI.
Is local AI automatically GDPR-compliant?
No, but it makes compliance much easier because your data does not leave the company. Legal basis, purpose limitation, informing data subjects and technical safeguards remain your responsibility. We do not give legal advice, but we are happy to work with your data protection officer.
What does sovereign AI mean?
AI is sovereign when you decide about data, access, operation and location yourself: data sovereignty, access sovereignty, operational sovereignty (no lock-in) and a known legal jurisdiction. Sovereignty does not mean self-sufficiency: non-critical tasks can still run via cloud interfaces.
Is local AI more secure than cloud AI?
Not automatically. Local AI avoids data leaving for third parties, but you are responsible for secure operation: access rights, updates, protection of the device. Properly set up and operated, it is the better choice for sensitive data. For non-critical uses, cloud AI can make sense.
What hardware do I need?
For many applications, Apple Silicon (Mac mini, Mac Studio) or NVIDIA DGX Spark is enough. The right size depends on the model: Qwen3.8-27B (Q4) needs about 18 GB, Qwen3.6-35B-A3B about 24 GB, a 70B model such as Llama 3.1 (Q4) about 40 to 50 GB of memory. We size it together with you.
How capable are local models?
For many tasks they are sufficient: summarising, drafting text, searching your own documents, extracting data from documents. For very difficult tasks, the large frontier models in the cloud can be better. We tell you honestly what to expect and test it with your real data in a pilot project.
Do we need our own hardware at all?
Not necessarily. We can start with your existing infrastructure or in a hybrid setup, and only recommend hardware when it makes economic and technical sense.
What does getting started cost?
A first tech sparring session (30 minutes) is free of charge. Pilot projects are billed transparently by effort. The current “from” prices for AI boxes are on the home page.
Is there funding?
Possibly. BAFA consulting funding covers up to 80 % in the eastern German states and 50 % in the western ones. Applications are possible until 31 December 2026; continuation afterwards is open. The German Qualifizierungschancengesetz (QCG) may apply to employee training. We are happy to check eligibility with you.
